Champions of Eden

As my final project i created a MOBA game, with priority on Character Design and Ability Design. A total of three champions, each having one passive, three basic and one ultimate ability. Next to it I also designed a World.

Game Design

Key Features:

  • Title: Champions of Eden

Level Design:

  • Classical MOBA map

    • Reason: simple map structure to understand

  • One base for each team in their corner

Game Modes:

      • Classic Mode in every MOBA, to train for ranked or have fun with friends​

      • In every MOBA game, for many the only reason to play these games​

      • Only the Middle Lane is available​

      • Each player gets a random champion (even if they didn't unlocked them)

      • Reason: Exist in every MOBA, as a short break between ranked and for fun small rounds

  • PvE​​​

    • Bot Games (1-5vs1-5)

      • Player and Bot number variable

      • Opponent are always bots

      • Reason: To try out the game in general but also to test new champions

    • Lore Quest

      • Available after obtaining a champion (buy purchasing with collectible ingame currency or real money)

      • Each one has three single-player mission to learn their backstory

      • Reason:

        • Normally you just read their backstories in MOBAs, but i wanted to make it more of a fun experience

        • Additionally it could be interesting for non MOBA players, to at least play these missions​​​​​​​

 

Champions:​

  • Maximum level 18

    • Each new round it gets back reseted on level 1

    • Gain experience through killing enemy champions, minions, jungle monsters or destroying towers

    • Each player levels for themselves, but they share experience points if they are near each other

  • None of the 10 players can choose the same champion​

  • Abilities:

    • One Passive (available on level 1)

    • Three Basic (available on level 1)

    • One Ultimate (available on level 6)

  • Talents:

    • One Talent per choosing option

      • Choosing option is all 3 levels (1,4,7,10,13,16)

      • Upgrades for abilities, normal attacks ore new active or passive features

      • On level 7 and 16 two choosing options for only the ultimate

  • Spells:

    • During ​​​champion selection you can equip one spell

    • Ward: Place an object which gives vision for a time period for your team

    • Smite: Deals damage to jungle monster

    • ​There are five positions where each player in a team fills one

    • Each position has a start point on the map

      • Uses high damage with abilities and can roam to other lanes (Mage / Assassin)

    • Bot

      • Start Point: Bottom Lane

      • Main damage dealer with his high damage per second (Marksman)

    • Supporter

      • Start Point: Bottom Lane

      • Assist at first the Bot player, but afterwards roams around the whole map to help his entire team (Mage / Tank)

    • Jungler

      • Start Point: Jungle (Top or Bot Jungle doesn't matter)

      • Collects experience point through slaying monsters and assist his teams with ambushes (Assassin / Fighter)​

Worlddesign

The Map of Eden was created with the program Wonderdraft. It took me one week to finish it.

I wanted to have many different places in there, like League of Legends, to have wide variety when it comes to designing the champions.

Eisenherz

  • Eisenherz (German) = Ironheart (English)

    • symbolize their resilience and compassion​

  • Medieval setting

  • capital city, with king and knight headquarters, in the middle​​

    • small routes to every village and cities in the kingdom​

  • many mountains to furthermore resemble their resilience​

  • knights are honorable fighters who priorities the safety of the citizens under the order of the king

  • Fighting Style in game:

    • mostly at the front​

    • disrupt enemies

    • can hold the line

Taure

  • Taure stands for Forest

  • citizens wants to live in seclusion

  • one big forest, which also works as a border between Eisenherz and Nightwing​

  • villages are hidden inside and difficult to reach​​

    • thanks to the magic of the forest, which hides their citizens from outsider​

  • the citizens inside are mostly magical creatures like fairies or elves

  • Fighting Style in game:

    • mostly with magic from a distance

    • hinder enemies into reaching them

    • healing or shielding allies

Nightwing

  • Nightwing, because the leader of this region is a vampire

  • monsters reign above this place​​

  • humen and monsters hunt each other

  • dead trees and ground

    • helps the monster to wipe out humans, due to the lack of oxygen for them​

  • a village for the last humen and one castle for the vampire​

  • monsters are mostly creatures from the horror franchise, like vampire, werewolf or zombies

  • Fighting Style in game:

    • at best in one on ones

    • good mobility through the map

    • dealing high damage in a short time

Port Gold

  • Port Gold, because it is a region full of pirates

  • only small villages, which brought them to go out on the sea for more valuable treasures

  • beach like region, since their connection to the sea

  • palms as trees, to symbolize the warm climate

  • right is Eisenherz but on a higher level, to make it more believable that they need ships to travel ​

  • Fighting Style in game:

    • stealing stats from enemies

    • cunning tricks

    • many different tools from the pirate world

Arielle

  • Arielle as in the name of the main charater of "The Little Mermaid"

  • underwater kingdom

  • very welcome to outsiders

    • want to live in harmony with everyone​

  • different sea creatures and sea grass next to the building to symbolize that they live underwater

  • citizens are mostly mermaids and sea creature/human hybrids ​

  • Fighting Style in game:

    • everyone uses water magic

    • more ways to reduce damage, instead of dealing it

    • swift and slippery movement

Dnalsi

  • Dnalsi is Island backwards

    • Island (German) = Iceland (English)

    • Iceland is known for having fire and ice

  • this island is divided in an ice and fire section

    • fire has lava rivers and a volcano

    • ice has ice mountains and frozen ground 

  • the buildings of the ice side are more advance then the fire side

    • ice is more connected to creating (snowman, ice sculptures)​

    • fire is more connected to destroying (forest fire, volcanic eruptions)

  • Fighting Style in game:

    • depending on the side, ice or fire magic

    • ice:

      • good disengages​

      • much crowd control

      • protecting allies

    • fire:

      • good engages

      • many self buffs 

      • bursting down enemies

Kingdom in Heaven

  • Kingdom in Heaven, flies in the sky above everything else

  • the clouds should furthermore indicate to it

  • ​they are above everything, since they seem themselves as the absolute beings

  • buildings are white because of their, self claimed, purity

  • Fighting Style in game:

    • strong offense, weak defense

    • cleansing debuffs and buffs​​

    • all ultimates are AoE spells

Hell Domain

  • Hell Domain, in it being the home of the demons

  • it is not actually on this map, it is a second dimension where the demon got banished

    • it is on the map, to have a visualization for it, without needing a second map for this small region​​

    • demons aren't actually from this region, each of them comes from another part of Eden​​

  • demons got banished, due to their evil nature

    • they used the other races as their play toys and killed them if they didn't needed them anymore​

  • buildings are just rocks, that the demons morphed into buildings​

  • next to rock there isn't anything else

  • A mysterious portal opened up, which led back to Eden

    • they are only able to exist in Eden for a short time, after being teleported back to Hell Domain​​​

  • Fighting Style in game:

    • everyone has crowd control

    • buffing themselves​​

    • depending on their origin region

Character Design

The three characters that i designed are demons, who got banished in the Hell Domain.

I decided for three demons, because next to their demonic feature, they originally came from different regions on Eden. In that way i could showcase similarities between champions from the same region and differences between the regions.

To further explain on the origin region of demons. This race was created by an old mage, by turning others into these dark magical beings. So their origin region is the one, where they lived before turning into demons.

At first i had an overall theme for the demons: Manipulating Emotions.

So i chose three emotions for each. Since in the MOBA world, there already exist the effects charm, fear and taunt, i used these control effects as a base.

My three emotions became: love (charm), fear (fear) and anger (taunt).

The Art for my champions was created with Adobe Firefly (Aiko / Ori) and Aitubo (Theron).

Note: Their AI-Art is not their final version but a direction where it would go.

Aiko

  • Aiko means "Child of Love"

  • Emotion: Love

  • Origin Region: Taure

  • Former Race: Fairy​

  • Role: Mid Lane

  • Class: Mage​

  • Main Colors:

    • Pink​

    • Purple

  • Story:​

    • Fall in love with a royal elf​

    • His father wanted him to marry a princess, which he doesn't

    • Aiko killed all marriage candidates to help him

    • After she confessed it to him, he was terrified of her

    • She forced him into a kiss to stop him from calling help and showing her love

    • With her magic she accidentally drained him out of his life

    • Aiko runs away and found an old mage who fulfilled her a wish

    • She wished to be loved

    • He transformed her into a demon with the power to seduce

    • The first thing Aiko did, was to let people fight over her to the dead

I turned Aikos appearance into a succubus, since they are throughout known as the seduce demon. Plus they also have wings as fairies, and a humanoid physique.

A common theme in the appearance of demons are the red eyes, and many of them grew horns during the transformation.

Her origin is Taure, since it is the region mostly connected to magic, and has a theme of hiding. Both of them are fitting for her, since i designed her as a mage, and in her abilities you can see that she doesn't want to face off the enemies.

Abilities

Punishment (Passive):

She deals additional magic damage against enemies who have the condition "Charmed" or "In Love".

Being from Taure gives her a focus on magical damage, but also as the love demon she first needs to seduce them.

Dark Sphere (1.Basic Ability):

Aiko fires of a dark magic projectile in the form of a ball. It goes through enemies and damage and slows everyone who touches it.

Since she doesn't want to face off enemies, she slows them which makes her harder to reach, like the villages in Taure.

Soul Extractor (2.Basic Ability):

Aiko extract life from enemies around her and heals herself with it. She can only use it against "Charmed" or "In Love" enemies.

This ability is based on her time as a fairy. She used this ability to murder her beloved one by accident and has fully mastered it as a demon. But by turning into a demon, she needs to seduce them first.

Declaration of Love (3.Basic Ability):

Aiko blows a kiss and the first enemy champion who got hit is "Charmed" by her.

Charmed: The target can not be controlled by his player anymore, and, automatically, goes slowly in the direction of the caster.

This is her ability to manipulate emotions of others.

Aura of Lust (Ultimate):

Aiko creates a cloud of fragrance, where every enemy champion gets the condition "In Love".

In Love: They attack the nearest unit, except the caster, next to them (even allies), with increased attack speed.

Demons can only be in Eden for a short time, but the damage they cause is pretty high. Like her ultimate which only goes for a few seconds but in this time she is the most powerful champion on the map. Plus it furthermore shows her connection with Taure, by isolating herself from the attacks of the enemies.

Talents

    • Name: Long-Distance Relationship​

      • Effect: Increase the range of Declaration of Love​

    • Name: Kiss and Away

      • Effect: Increase your movement speed for a short time after the usage of Soul Extractor

      • Effect: Increase the damage from Punishment​​​​

  • Level 4:​​

    • Name: Hell Sphere

      • Effect: Decrease the Mana Cost of Dark Sphere and increase the slow effect ​

    • Name: Mana Drain​

      • Effect: Get Mana back after the usage of Soul Extractor​

    • Name: Tasteful Lust​

      • Effect: Heal yourself after killing a champion, who is either charmed or in love​

  • Level 7:

    • Name: Love comes quick​

      • Effect: Decrease the casting time of Aura of Lust​

    • Name: Widespread Love​

      • Effect: Increase the radius of Aura of Lust​

  • Level 10:​

    • Name: Another One​

      • Effect: After killing an enemy, who is charmed, reset the cooldown of Declaration of Love​

    • Name: Soul Drainer​

      • Effect: Increase the radius and damage of Soul Extractor​

    • Name: Touch me More​

      • You gain a new ability that activates upon pressing the button "1"

      • Effect: All enemies that recently damaged you, will be charmed as if they got hit by Declaration of Love

  • Level 13:​​

    • Name: My Love is for Everyone​

      • Effect: Declaration of Love also charmed enemies around the hit target

    • Name: Explosiv Kiss

      • Effect: Declaration of Love also deals damage now

    • Name: Devil Sphere

      • Effect: Increase the damage of Dark Sphere ​

  • Level 16:​​

    • Name: Fight for Me​

      • Effect: Enemies in love don't attack teammates of Aiko, if an enemy unit is near them​

    • Name: Endless Love

      • Effect: If an enemy champion kills one of his teammates the timer of "In Love" and the attack speed bonus increases. Even after the field of Aura of Lust vanished ​

Ori

  • Ori can mean "The Quarrelsome One"

  • Emotion: Anger

  • Origin Region: Eisenherz

  • Former Race: Dwarf

  • Role: Top Lane

  • Class: Fighter​

  • Main Colors:

    • Grey

    • Purple

  • Story:​

    • Was part of an Independent dwarven warrior troop​

    • They fought to protect the weak, except Ori, he wanted to fight strong opponents​​

    • They saved a village from a demon attack but Ori was dissatisfied, since the demon got away

    • The king send out his knights to invite them for their heroic actions

    • But the knights weren't happy because they were supposed to save the village

    • After arriving they saw Ori alone and threaten him

    • Ori kills them all in cold blood and got banished from his leader

    • He went to Taure to train in the forest, where he met an old mage, who wanted to fulfill him a wish

    • Ori wanted power to fight his old leader and anyone who gets in his way

    • He transformed him into a demon who can weaponize his wrath

    • The first thing Ori did with his new power was to kill his fellow companions

Connecting a dwarf with anger, was an easy decision for me. I wanted a warrior to represent anger, and dwarves are always connected to weaponry and being tough.

He was equipped with an axe, but light armor to connect to his barbaric fighting style.

In comparison to Aiko, he looks more like a his origin race then a demon. His are more subtle with his red eyes and purple veins on the arms.

His origin is Eisenherz, the medieval region of knights. He fits their the most due to his primary weapon fighting. But becoming a demon, he also gains magical abilities.

Abilities

Battle Frenzy (Passive):

Ori can collect stacks as long as he is fighting, to increase his normal damage. He loses this bonus, if he isn't in a fight.

I designed this ability, due to his trait, the love to fighting.

Axe Swinger (1.Basic Ability):

He swings his axe in front of him in a cone area and damages any enemies.

​​

Because of his connection to Eisenherz, i gave him a simple weapon attack as an ability.

Enraging Scream (2.Basic Ability):

Ori screams out loud and anyone near him gets the condition "Taunt". During the condition he receives less damage from them.

Taunt: They automatically attack the caster with normal attacks.

This is his ability to manipulate emotion of others.

Barbaric Onslaught (3.Basic Ability):

Ori jumps forward. In the air he receives less damage and upon landing, enemies take damage on the impact point.

Champions from Eisenherz are front fighters, so i thought it was fitting to give him an ability to jump in front of his team, into the enemies.

Inflamed Wrath (Ultimate):

Ori channels his wrath and inflames himself, to increase his normal damage output and even more against taunted enemies. Furthermore he has a small fire ring around him, which deals magical damage.

Demons can only be in Eden for a short time, but the damage they cause is pretty high. Like his ultimate which only goes for a few seconds but in this time he gains a great buff and in combination with his other abilities, which makes him into a force to be reckon with.

  • Level 4:​​

    • Name: Blacksmith

      • Effect: Increase the damage of your normal attacks ​

    • Name: Into the Air

      • Effect: Enemies become "Knocked Up" after being hit in the impact point of Barbaric Onslaught

      • Knocked Up: They jump a little bit above the ground and are unable to use any commands 

    • Name: Seething Anger​

      • Effect: If you reach the maximum stacks of Battle Frenzy, increase your attack speed as long as you have the stacks

  • Level 7:

    • Name: Blunt Weapons​

      • Effect: During Inflamed Wrath, reduce physical damage​

    • Name: Useless Magic​

      • Effect: During Inflamed Wrath, reduce magical damage

  • Level 10:​

    • Name: Keep Fighting​

      • Effect: Increase the duration of the effect of Enraging Scream​

    • Name: Dwarven Resistance​

      • Effect: The jump of Barbaric Onslaught can't be interrupted​

    • Name: Muscle Strength​

      • Effect: Increase the maximum number of stacks of Battle Frenzy

  • Level 13:​​​ 

    • Name: All-Round Attack

      • Effect: Axe Swinger deals damage in a circle around the caster now​

    • Name: Long Jump

      • Effect: Increase the jump distance of Barbaric Onslaught

    • Name: Nothing Can Stop Me

      • You gain a new ability that activates upon pressing the button "1" or "2", if "You Can't Escape Me" was learned

      • Effect: ​Remove all Crowd Control effects from you except "Knock Up"​​​

  • Level 16:​​

    • Name: Endless Fighting​

      • Effect: After killing an enemy during Inflamed Wrath, reset the expire timer of the ultimate​

    • Name: Sea of Flames

      • Effect: Increase the radius of the fire ring and its damage ​

Theron

  • Theron stands for "Hunter"

  • Emotion: Fear

  • Origin Region: Nightwing

  • Former Race: Werewolf

  • Role: Jungler

  • Class: Assassin​

  • Main Colors:

    • Black

    • Dark Gray

  • Story:​

    • Theron was once part of a pack of hunters​

    • They hunted down humen for food or entertainment

    • What they don't know is that some humen studied their hunting behavior

    • One day during their hunt, they got ambushed by these humen

    • Theron was able to escape into Taure but got deadly hurt and was full of fear

    • An old mage came closer to him and wanted to fulfill him a wish

    • Theron wanted to become the hunter again and not the prey

    • He transformed him into a demon with hunting skills beyond humen possibilities

    • The first thing Theron did, was to hunt down humen hunters and a village with one survivor so anyone knows that there is no escape from him 

I wanted one of my demons to become an assassin with the emotion fear. Since i created Nightwing, a region full of horror monster, it was an easy choice to take a werewolf as the former race.
A werewolf is already monstrous enough, but to give him more demonic vibes, he became horns but also a third eye. Due to his nature as a hunter, an additional eye to improve one of his senses made a good fit for me.
He has mostly dark colors, to hide himself in the dark for better hunting.

With his origin in Nightwing, his abilities have the overall theme of hunting, which is a good fit for the emotion fear.

Abilities

On the Hunt (Passive):
After inflictin the condition "Fear" on an enemy, Theron gains an attack speed bonus.

He isn't just a hunter, he loves to hunt and put fear into his prey, which is why a designed him this ability.

Claw Jump (1.Basic Ability):
Theron jumps forward and land behind the first enemy champion or monster, who got hit and damages them. He jumps through minions and deals them half the damage.
​​
As a hunter, i find it fitting for him to have a leap to use on his prey.

Full Moon Howling (2.Basic Ability):
Theron lets out a howl, which infects the status "Panic" upon any enemy in hearing radius. He turns himself invisible and if he damages someone, who has "Panic", out of the invisibility, it turns into "Fear". 
Panic: An icon appears above the head of the infected one.
Fear: They run away from caster, with reduced movement speed.

This is his ability to manipulate emotion of others. It furthermore is a connection to his life before as a hunter.

Bloody Bite (3.Basic Ability):
Theron bites in the target and heals himself.

As a jungler he runs around the map a lot, which is why i gave him this ability, which reduces the times he needs to go back to heal himself.
 
The Hunte Begins​ (Ultimate):
He turns the whole map dark, to decrease the vision of the enemies. Furthermore all enemies on the map gain "Panic", which turns into "Fear" after being damaged by Theron. He is faster, when he runs in the direction of an enemy with "Panic".

Demons can only be in Eden for a short time, but the damage they cause is pretty high. Like his ultimate which makes the whole map his hunting ground. Since it is global, nobody knows who he chose as his prey and with the limited vision, he sees you before you see him. During his ultimate, you can't let your guard down, because even his teammates have the vision advantage over you.

Talents

  • Level 1:

    • Name: Strong Legs

      • Effect: Increase the jump distance of Claw Jump

    • Name: Iron Claws

      • Effect: After being damage by Claw Jump, the target receives more damage from physical attacks

    •  Name: Strong Lungs​

      • Effect: ​Increase the radius of Full Moon Howling​​​

  • Level 4:​​

    • Name: Blood-Red Claws

      • Effect: Increase the damage of Claw Jump ​

    • Name: Furious Hunter

      • Effect: Increase the duration of On the Hunt

    • Name: Successful Hunt​

      • Effect: Upon killing an enemy who was frightened, heal yourself

  • Level 7:

    • Name: Four-Legged​

      • Effect: Increase the movement speed bonus of The Hunt Begins

    • Name: Darkness is My Home​

      • Effect: During the darkness of The Hunt Begins, the damage output is increased

  • Level 10:​

    • Name: Tough Fur​

      • Effect: Reduce physical damage​

    • Name: Another Full Moon​

      • Effect: Decrease the cooldown of Full Moon Howling

    • Name: Sharp Senses​

      • Effect: Increase your vision radius

  • Level 13:​​​ 

    • Name: Vampire Bite

      • Effect: Increase the healing of Bloody Bite

    • Name: Stalking Master

      • Effect: Become invisible after killing a frightened enemy

    • Name: Monstrous Scream

      • Effect: Double the duration of the invisibility and the panic condition of Full Moon Howling​​

  • Level 16:​​

    • Name: I AM THE HUNTER​

      • Effect: After killing an enemy during the darkness of The Hunt Begins, increase its duration 

    • Name: I AM NOT THE PREY

      • Effect: Using Full Moon Howling during the darkness of The Hunt Begins, all enemies in hearing radius become frightened as if they got this condition from The Hunt Begins
